July 8, the 2025 State Science and Technology Awarding Meeting of the People's Republic of China was held in Beijing and the HBIS Hansteel project of Development and Application of Key Technologies for Clean Purification of High-Quality Steel for Advanced Manufacturing won the second prize of the ?National Scientific and Technological Progress Award.
This project developed key technologies for the purification preparation of high-quality steel materials used in advanced manufacturing, addressing both cleanliness requirements and service performance demands. It refined the fundamental theories governing the nucleation, growth, and removal of inclusions in steel, established comprehensive multi-stage inclusion removal techniques, and achieved efficient inclusion elimination. The study introduced a steel cleanliness index, developed precise calcium treatment methods for aluminum-deoxidized steels, and proposed synergistic modification strategies combining alloying and slag refining for aluminum-free deoxidized steels. Additionally, tailored control strategies for inclusions were formulated to meet specific service performance requirements across different steel products. This project is used by HBIS and other steel producers to solve the foreign inclusion difficulties in the raw material preparations before manufacturing advanced steel products efficiently and with low costs. The intellectual property achievements have been substantial, yielding significant economic and social benefits.
